Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Objectivity in media reporting is crucial in building trust, particularly when addressing sensitive issues such as corruption. In Sokoto North Local Government, where corruption has significant social and economic impacts, the role of print media in providing unbiased and accurate information is vital. Public perception of media objectivity influences the credibility and impact of corruption-related reporting. Recent research highlights that a lack of objectivity, whether real or perceived, can diminish public trust and engagement with anti-corruption efforts (Abdullahi & Usman, 2024). This study evaluates public perceptions of print media objectivity in reporting corruption in Sokoto North Local Government, exploring factors that shape these perceptions and their implications.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the critical role of print media in anti-corruption efforts, accusations of bias, sensationalism, and inadequate investigative reporting have raised concerns about their objectivity. This study investigates how the public perceives print media’s objectivity in reporting corruption and the factors that influence these perceptions.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate public perceptions of print media objectivity in reporting corruption in Sokoto North Local Government.

2. To identify factors that affect perceptions of objectivity in corruption reporting.

3. To assess the implications of perceived objectivity on public trust and engagement with anti-corruption reporting.

1.5 Research Hypotheses

3. Perceived bias in media reporting reduces public engagement with anti-corruption efforts.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study underscores the importance of objectivity in media reporting and its role in fostering trust and engagement in anti-corruption initiatives. The findings will guide media professionals and policymakers in improving reporting standards.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on public perceptions of print media objectivity in reporting corruption in Sokoto North Local Government, Sokoto State.
